Young Authors Contest Guidelines
1.The teacher must be comfortable with the fact that the “book” submitted is the work of the student.
2.Students may receive adult help in the following areas: proofreading, typing, and binding.
3.The following should originate with the Young Author:
4.The student may write on any topic of personal interest. The topic and language must be appropriate for viewing in a school setting. Research reports are not appropriate for this contest.
5.The length and format is to be determined by the young author. If a student chooses to submit poetry, the following guidelines need to me met:
6.There is no size requirement in terms of length, height, or width.
7.The district will judge manuscripts on the following criteria:
8.The manuscript must be in book form with a substantial cover with pages securely attached. The manuscript will not be accepted for judging if this criterion is not met.
9.Books authored and/or illustrated by more than one child will NOT be accepted.
10.Dictated books may be typed or handwritten by adults, but must be in the student’s own language

- the idea and composition of the book (any style of writing—poetry, short story, essay, play—is acceptable)
- the idea and completion of the illustrations (if child chooses to illustrate their story)

- K-4: at least 4 poems needed to make a book
- 5-8: at least 10 poems needed to make a book

- originality, creativity
- organization, details, description, logic
- spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary
- appearance, appeal, legibility
